Consistent riyaz is not merely repetition. It is a meditative process — a dialogue between the musician and the music, where technique slowly dissolves into expression. Great maestros like Pt. Bhimsen Joshi and Ustad Rashid Khan were known to practice for 8-12 hours a day in their formative years.

For beginners, riyaz should begin with alankars (pattern exercises) on Sa-Re-Ga-Ma-Pa-Dha-Ni-Sa, moving to simple compositions as the voice or fingers develop fluency. Even 30-45 minutes of focused daily practice creates remarkable progress over months and years.

The key is consistency — not intensity. A student who practices 30 minutes every day will progress far faster than one who practices 3 hours occasionally.
